Why do I ride?

There's this brilliant website called Quora. If you aren't on it and you consider your IQ to be above average, you should definitely join it. For the uninititated, it is a Q&A forum, only socialized. You can follow topics, questions and people. You can post questions and answer questions too.

I came across a question on Quora and the question went something like "Why do people ride motorcycles? They're dangerous and my father works in the E.R., and I have heard anecdotes about people who have fallen off motorcycles. What makes it worth it?".

That's a very interesting question, and this was my answer to it. It's worth a share and maybe some of you had the same question too.

The short answer: it gets closest to flying.

Bikes are fathers and cars are mothers. Bikes teach you how to drive properly. I have seen many people who have learnt the car first, and most of them ignore proper downshifts while braking. You can't get it into their head that it is quite dangerous and highly inefficient to brake without engine braking.

Learning on a bike is different. One mistake and you're pretty screwed, unlike a car; hence you learn how to drive properly. A motorcycle is like the father who throws you into the deep end of a pool, and a car is like the mother who molly coddles you with a nice cup of tea after your swim. I'm not saying that cars are horrible, I enjoy them too. There's nothing like the love of a mother.

I have fallen and have been fortunate enough to survive accidents that could have killed me, but that only increased the bond between me and motorcycles. It taught me respect for them, and I treat them like how I would treat a human being. You need to be gentle, and show some respect, and how you act now will determine what you reap in the future.

I love the speed, I love the wind, I love cutting people off at ridiculous speeds in traffic. It is possible that I may meet with an accident, but that doesn't stop me from riding. It would be absolutely ridiculous to let a small probability overcome something that consumes me and is very meditative.

There are many activities that can kill you, but that doesn't stop you from pursuing them. People trek through forests for fun and go camping; they can get killed by bears and leopards or get bitten by snakes. Yet, they follow their passion because for them, a life isn't worth living without that sense of achievement. People climb mountains for the same reason, and people race bikes for the same reason. It encourages a healthy competitive spirit too.

People do tend to ask why do you do this when it is so risky; but the fact is that without such breed of humans, advances in technology would be impossible. Without such people, all we would be is one boring sloth-bear-like species, merely procreating and reproducing spineless, boring individuals.

I hope that answers your question.
